the ravens this sunday february third. kickoff is 3:30. the game will be followed by a special post game episode of elementary. and then, stay tuned for a super night on the bay bridge. that's right. cbs 5 will bring you the very first live television program from the deck of the new bay bridge complete with post game super bowl coverage from new orleans and all around the bay bridge. we will celebrate the completion. this is right after the super bowl. >> great night of tv. san jose police are looking for robbers who attacked two women after the victims caught the crooks breaking into their car. happened just before 2:00 a.m. police told cbs 5 reporter mark sayer the suspects even chased the women back into their

house. >> reporter: we are listening the victims are a 70-year-old -- we are learning the victims are a 70-year-old woman and her daughter. an awe tour burglary quickly escalated into a home invasion and that has police very concerned. >> police interviewed neighbors and collected evidence in this neighborhood just before 2:00 a.m. two women inside their home heard somebody breaking into their car. when the women started yelling at the world series men to stop, police say one of the men chased the victims into the house and punched one in the face. when the women ran to the neighbor's home for help the suspects went back inside the home and started stealing valuables. >> very violent. chasing victims inside their house. when they try to flee, they actually chased the victims outside the house.

>> the entire incident has neighbors on edge. >> sad. especially since it was men beating up a girl. i don't think that is right. she was trying to protect her property. >> some other neighbors report their car, too, were broken into overnight. police throughout the day were trying to determine if the crimes are related. >> yeah. you have to be on your toes now. you have to watch what you are doing and lock up your belongings and be more aware of your surroundings. it is unfortunate. >> this man believes increasing crime is related to the reduction of san jose police officers due to budget cuts. >> less officers, more crime. >> another thing officers are look for, any residence that had video surveillance. paul rodriguez checked his camera but didn't catch anything out of the ordinary. >> i was very surprised.

i came home today and police were out here. i was out there doing my thing and i was like whoa, man. >> reporter: now, the 74-year- old victim was taken to the hospital. we are told she does not have serious injuries. detectives are very much investigating this case, elizabeth. they want to catch these two people. that is the story from san jose. back to you. >> incredible how brazen they were. mark, thank you. other bay area headlines. police in fairfield investigating the apparent homicide of a teenage girl. someone found her body this morning at a park. so far the victim's name has not been released and no word on any suspects. health officials confirm two more deaths tied to the flu in the bay area. authorities say two homeless men recently died from flu symptoms. they were both 58 years old.

that raises the bay area death toll to three. a 98-year-old woman also from santa clara county died earlier this year. a man who police call one of the worst criminals is behind bars tonight. s.w.a.t. teams closed in on 30-year-old mitchell pope this morning at a home near center and lewis streets. pope surrendered peacefully after a 30-minute standoff. he is wanted for attempted murder and is linked to several crimes mt.area. coming up, why -- crimes in the area. after one of the driest januaries on record in the bay area, february starting off pretty dry. some of you hit 70 today. we will take a look at the highs and what you can expect next week, coming up.

amber alert hoax. she called police overnight r and an oakland woman could face charges for an am bare letter hoax. >> she called police saying her husband beat her and then kidnapped their 1-year-old daughter. that prompted a sate-wide amber a-- state-wide amber alert. the husband called police to say there was no kidnapping and there is no child. the 49ers have a chance to win their situation super bowl. at the center of all the attention -- sixth super bowl.

the center of it all colin kaepernick. >> with a cannon of an arm, quarterback colin kaepernick is simply phenomenal. >> i have never seen that kid break a sweat. have you. >> no one comes here to be a backup >> if you go in the game confident, you will be confident in the game. >> capparis rise is nothing short of amazing. the three words tattooed across his chest say it all. against all odds. kaepernick was born in wisconsin to an unmarried teenager who put him up for adoption. his adopt parents had lost two sons -- adoptive parents had lost two sons due to congenital heart defects. as a child colin suffered from upper respiratory problems. at one point his parents had

him tested for cystic fibrosis, which he did not have. at age 4, the family moved. he excelled if both sports and academics. football was his first love. but at 6' 4", he weighed just 170. >> very tall, very lean, very skinny. i was hoping he wouldn't break. >> only one major college offered kaepernick a scholarship. once again, he rose to the occasion. >> you have a guy like cap who can run like a gazelle, you have to put one and a half people on him. >> now, kaepernick's a star but not just on the football field. the 25-year-old donates his time at camp taylor, a summer camp for children with congenital heart problems. >> he said i want to do something that will help kids with heart defects. >> one of the coolest things is

eight now the winds are under 5 miles per hour. they have been fluctuating. the barometer pressure gives you and i an idea that high pressure has knuckled in providing us with this great dry weather period as far as conditions are concerned. out here at treasure island, the oakland san francisco bay bridge. i want you to take this into consideration. that bridge was opened up november '12 of 1936. that is 76 years ago. when it first opened up, the top span had traffic only for cars. down below, the bottom deck was for trains and trucks. now, fast forward nearly 77 years into the future and it needs renovation. this bay bridge is expected to open up on labor day of this

who will not make up the majority. demographics just released show latinos will be the largest demographic next year >> not a fast change but a slow and steady shift. california is becoming a state with a majority latino population. >> we have known it for a long time. >> the san jose activist says it is sure to have economic and political ramifications. >> once the latinos mobilize we can be a force. >> whites and latinos currently represent 39% of the state's population. >> the level of educational attainment of our hispanic youth and young adults, about 50% are not high school

5. the dow closed above 14,000 for the first time in more than five years. stocks jumped after government released its latest unemployment report. that report shows the economy at 157,000 new jobs last month. overall unemployment picked up. wall street focused on the positive. >> yes, we're growing. >> that kind of optimism and strong auto sales propel the stock market today. tall-important friendly wager is in place tonight for the big game. san francisco mayor ed lee and his baltimore counterpart agreed to take part. >> i will show them the crabs

an unusual end to a police pursuit in southern california 6789 police pulled over a dui suspect after a slow speed chase, but then a 15 minute standoff involves a man refilling and inhaling gas from balloons in his car. officers approached his car with guns drawn. the suspect was eventually alested. the percentage of drunk driving related accidents is about 75% higher tan other days. julie watts on why super bowl party hosts should really be mindful of those numbers. >> there will be plenty of pizza, lots of wings, and alcohol. >> i'll have a couple beers at least. >> probably margarita. >> it is not what's served, but how much is served people hosting should be concerned about. >> that party host can be held

significantly more rainfall in february after a dry january. 42 tonight. dry in san jose. concord 39. oakland 36. san francisco 48. looking at the moisture content in the skies above us. high thin cirrus cloud cover. no rainfall associated with this that will make it to the bay area. all about that big dome of high pressure. we are coming up on a week now and it is sitting here right on top of us keeping us mainly dry. next week, changes toward the middle of the week. high pressure begins to move out opening up the door for low pressure to move in. there will be showers. they are not going to be significant. what will be the big story is much cooler weather. if you're a fan of winter, you want it to be chilly before summer, the end of next week

conference, student bites. we are about ready to play some football, guys. i'm going to tell you about a little game before the game. there are five super bowl rings. he is the owner of one of football's great sprain cheeses and dynasties and the hall of fame -- greatest dynasties. >> my uncle, you talk about fire and passion, just the quest for trying to win everything that you are possibly win in sports, that's what i grew up with. i watched him and i watched his passion not interfere with actually running a football team, not interfere with, you know, this is my guy and we're going to draft this guy. he let the experts do what they

needed to do. he let them build a football team that he provided all the resources for and really set the vision and set the tone and allowed those guys to do their work. that's one of the things i take from eddie. i am not an expert. i shouldn't be there in the draft room. i shouldn't be telling people we need to get this guy in free agency. there is no question in my mind that he belongs in the hall of fail. fame. i hope people see that for what it is and understand it. he was the best owner in the history of professional sports. >> reporter: indeed he was. and, folks, i wish i had a vote. i don't. results will be announced tomorrow at 2:30. long after the football game is over sunday night the fun continues with the late late show host craig ferguson.
